You’ve probably heard it and seen it all over your social media discovery page or even some of the lifestyle and health bloggers you follow on Instagram.
‘Sage for positive energy in your home’, ‘Smudging to rid your atmosphere of bacteria for better health’, ‘Welcome more health into your life with sage and activating your chakras’, yada, yada, yada.
I use to think it was just a bunch of ‘Hocus Pocus’ but the pleasantly ‘scary’ thing in the ‘movement’ of people using sage, incense, and crystals to enhance their spiritual life is very effective.
Let me explain. See, for those of us who believe in a ‘higher power’ and very intuitive we find ourselves more in touch with ‘nature’. The nature that God gave us all access to.
I’m not here to argue if your religious belief is aligned with this practice or not.
Frankly, you don’t need to be ‘religious’ to practice meditation or use natural ailments to adopt these habits that I’m going to go into detail about in this blog.
So please, spare me (and others who use this in their lives) the judgement you may be tempted to comment in this post.
Lets talk about the history (very briefly) behind sage/smudging practices.
Smudging is a ritual that originated in the Native American culture for the purpose of riding their environments of ‘negative spirits’, bad thoughts and healing the body.
In many aspects this is considered a religious practice for the indigenous people of our world today.
Because of this ,smudging is something that should not be taken lightly or is not a ‘game’ as I like to put it.
So don’t think you can practice this and have skepticism in the back of your mind or use it as a joke, because that would be considered disrespect to the cultures that started it.
Now that modern society has taken on this practice for themselves (seriously) more and more individuals are adopting this practice as a lifestyle.
So, if you’ve ever considered sageing/smudging for the first time (like me), here is a little ‘Sage 101’.
*Have a ‘fire source’. So that you can light your sage/smudge stick
*Set your intention. Basically you want to have your ‘why’ behind smudging your home (or yourself). For example, I set an ‘intention’ with a mantra:
“I now rid my home of any and all negative spirits and energy. I now welcome love, health and prosperity into this home.”
There is power in the toung so saying it out loud makes it more effective.
- Open a window or door. This does not have to be all the way, it can just be cracked. The idea is when you command that negative spirits get out your home, they have a place to ‘leave out ‘.
- Have a fan (optional). To rid of any extra smoke that maybe left over from lighting your sage stick.
Thats pretty much it. To take it a step further I had a crystal in the room that I was blessing to activate ‘chakra’ energy and to make it more ‘powerful’.
My home smells ‘cleaner’ and I’m noticing a more positive vibe with the interactions I’m having with my significant other in the home.
